The biggest disappointment of the project so far has been what happened last Sunday night. I was planning and getting ready to have my online Skype lesson with the youtube user happybanjodude. I had everything set up, and was waiting eagerly for the video call. After waiting for about 15 minutes, I received a message from him and got the bad news that his internet was down due to a power outage. The lesson I could have had would helped me so much with continuing to increase my banjo skills, but it was not successful. The worst part is that I won't be able to reschedule for a few more weeks. I am still looking forward to the lesson, but this would have been the critical time to push me forward in the banjo learning endeavor.
Despite these technical difficulties I have had some great success. One of my big goals was to incorporate banjo in the final song on my upcoming album. I started to write the banjo part to the new song and I am quite happy on how it is turning out. The banjo riffs adds a lot of depth and variety to the song. Writing a song with a new instrument is even more challenging than learning an instrument. It has showed me a whole new side to the mechanics and theory of the banjo.
One great addition to my banjo learning techniques has been books I have gotten as a present from my friend John Abrams. For my birthday he gave me two books on the banjo. One of the books was an overall banjo techniques encyclopedia and a Beatles song book on the banjo. I plan to use these awesome books soon in my banjo learning process. Thanks John! See all of you next week!
Hey Ben,
ReplyDeleteWow, that really sucks about Happybanjodude, I was excited to find out how the lesson with him went. Besides that though, your project seems to be coming along fantastically. You seem passionate about the banjo, and the fact that you are incorporating your project into your personal album is really cool. It would make sense that you would gain a lot more knowledge on the banjo from making a song with it, and it seems like you are not forcing it at all. I assume that at the end of your project everyone will be able to see the song in action? That would be pretty awesome. Also, John is awesome to give you banjo books, a very good gift idea on his part!
Hey there Ben-
ReplyDeleteIt does suck that Happybanjodude could not ultimately give you your lesson, though it seems that you are on a solid track, regardless. I feel that the best way to learn something, especially when it comes to music, is immediately applying that knowledge. With writing a song that incorporates banjo, you are able to apply your knowledge, which will ultimately help you retain it. In addition, you seem to have a solid track ahead of you, though what is the end goal? I am sure that you have it in your previous blogposts (which I haven't read, though are you creating/performing a song.. or several?
Anyhow, good job so far.
Hi Ben, for my final goal, I plan to perform a song (haven't decided whether live or on video yet)
DeleteBENJAMIN! First off I would like to tell you that the layout and design of your blog paints the mood of what is going on. It is disappointing that you did not get to video conference with one of the greats of YouTube. I hope you can meet with him another time and learn a lot. The banjo is an interesting instrument and I never knew that it was what played the Cotton Eye Joe. I have also ran into some difficulties but I work around them and somehow find a way to progress. It is kind of your pal John to give you a present relating to your project. It seems that you are still progressing at a fast rate. I think it would be cool if you could play a popular song on the banjo that is regularly played on the guitar. It would be cool to see how different it would sound and if it sounds anything like the original.
ReplyDeleteKeep up the good work.
